Bring Chocolate or Get Out

It’s Tuesday. I’m very proud of myself for knowing that. This is day ten of my current migraine and although it’s faded somewhat at the moment, it’s far from gone. Other people have seasonal allergies in the spring. I have migraines. Oh joy. Aren’t I just the lucky one?

Yep, being just a tad sarcastic here. If you’ve ever had a migraine or something similar you’ll understand, forgive me and be impressed that I’m functional. Well, make that marginally functioning. I made it to work today but everything I did was in slow motion so I didn’t accomplish quite what I’d hoped to. There’s always tomorrow. Maybe by then my eyes will cooperate and focus on the same thing at the same time. Yeah, I know. I’m asking for a hell of a lot with that one but it takes a lot longer to do things with one eye closed and all that extra swiveling about started getting to me after a while.

The biggest problem, I mean other than the never-ending pain, nausea, sensitivity to light, sound, smells and temperature, is that my normal ability to filter and censure myself is impaired. Greatly some of the time. I know you’ll have trouble believing this but at work I’m generally well behaved and down right boring. Yeah, I really am. Stop laughing!

My current coworkers don’t know me well enough to know if I was kidding or not when things slipped out. Made for some interesting moments over the last week but I suppose it never hurts to make people wonder. Oh, by the way, if anyone I work with is reading this, yes, I was dead serious when I said you can no longer have any sort of office supplies without an offering of chocolate. That’s how it always should have been anyway, that’s how it’s going to be from now on and don’t even think of bringing the inferior stuff.

Hate Ants, Love My Friends

Yes, ant season has started again. Little suckers get a break today. It’s raining so I can’t spray the hell out of the foundation of my house like I normally do to rid myself of the pesky nuisances. Oh, it’s not a total invasion. I’ve only found half a dozen of the teeny tiny brown ones but that’s six too many in my book. Ants belong outside. Period. End of discussion. I don’t go out and mess around in their hills. They can damn well stay out of my house. It’s going to be nice tomorrow and I’ve warned them. If they want to live they will vacate the premises instantly. Otherwise I’m declaring all out war and I’ve had years of experience so they don’t stand a chance.

On a much happier note I had dinner with my adopted family last night. Neeley was in town for a few hours so she called and told me they were on the way to get me, destination to be determined en route. Riley is just back from her visit with the Middle Child, still on her big adventure in France, and I hadn’t seen her yet to hear all about her trip. Guess what! I got presents. A bright yellow Tour de France T-shirt and Milka bars. She knows me so well. The Little One wasn’t with them but that’s okay. I hung out with her the other night when my phone wasn’t working, something I might have to do again soon simply because she makes me laugh. And the Paternal One, well, he’s so kind, putting up with me as he does for the sake of his girls.

Okay, time to get to work here. I’ve been playing far too much lately instead of revising the story I should be working on. I left my characters in limbo because I couldn’t figure out the best way to get them from where they are to where they have to be next. Maybe they’re finally sick enough of just sitting there doing nothing to help today. Let’s hope so.

I Can Change a Light Bulb

I was driving home from work today, pondering what in the world I might ramble on about here and having no decent ideas. I’d decided on telling you how snarky I’ve been feeling since I was sick and that it was pointed out to me. In the nicest way and by someone I can laugh about it with. Ever since I started this job I’ve been attempting to behave myself and not blurt out what I’m thinking at all inappropriate moments. This has given the impression that I’m nice. Well I am but there’s generally a healthy dose of sarcasm mixed in. Monday morning I went to work feeling absolutely horrendous and some of that sarcasm was showing for a change. Today, though I felt better, I still didn’t have the energy to be perky.

What do I mean by this? One of my duties is to sashay off to the post office as needed. I like that and have no problem taking personal mail when I’m going anyway. Today I had nothing official to take so I had the nerve to say no to someone who wanted me to mail Easter cards. Hmm, last I checked the organization that employs me doesn’t do Easter cards but maybe I missed that in my handbook. I’ll have to double check. On the upside, it annoyed the individual enough to keep her from hanging out downstairs which meant I didn’t have to stifle the impulse to tell her to use her inside voice. Yes, she’s a bit boisterous the majority of the time.

Another moment that pushed me today was when I attempted to enter one of the secure areas. There’s a buzzer that is utilized to alert the staff at the desk that someone is waiting to be admitted. Today however, the staff member inside had the intercom activated which meant the buzzer didn’t buzz. When she finally decided to acknowledge me rapping on the chamber door she actually tried to pretend she hadn’t just been involved in a lengthy personal conversation. Kind of pointless since I’d heard every word over the intercom.

The third thing that heightened my snarkiness was a blown light bulb. Now I admit I’m female. I also admit I’m not the most mechanically inclined individual in the world. I am, contrary to what one of the maintenance guys thinks, perfectly capable of changing a light bulb. I am also clever enough to pull the string on the light fixture itself just in case the last person turned it off that way instead of by using the wall switch. In all fairness to the man in question he is generally very helpful and rarely treats me like an incompetent female. So why then did he immediately pull the string and rechange the light bulb after I’d stated that I had already done both? In the end it required a whole new light socket, something I am not at all interested in wanting to do myself though I’m positive I could should I ever choose to.

Anyway, I came home feeling a tad grumpy. Then I checked my email and found a message from an old friend with whom I haven’t spoken in about six months. We’ve both tried but keep missing each other in person. Her email was just what I needed to erase the annoyances of my day. She told me of her misadventures that occurred throughout her recent vacation. Reading it I could practically hear her voice and was chuckling along with her. She ending by mentioning that her daughter visited from the third world country she is currently saving by way of Vienna which means I have Milka chocolate waiting for me the next time we see each other. Yep, it really is the little things that make all the difference.
